Primo: using the library catalogue: Getting started

Primo

Primo, the Library catalogue lists every book, pamphlet, print copy journal, DVD, media and many other resources in Aberystwyth University’s libraries and gives you all the information you need to locate and use those resources for your study. 

Where can I find Primo?

You can find Primo, the library catalogue in a number of convenient locations online:

You can also visit the Hugh Owen and Physical Sciences Libraries where you can find designated Primo machines.

Why should I sign-in?

You sign-in to Primo using your Aberystwyth University:

  • username and
  • password.

Signing-in will ensure:

  • you have access to the widest range of resources available to you
  • you can read online and download e-resources 
  • you can pin titles for later reference
  • you can request, view and manage your requested items
  • you can check what you currently have on loan and when they are due back
  • you can pay any outstanding library fines

If your username and password are accepted but something other than your name is displayed, please contact Information Services

How do I sign in to Primo

  • Visit Primo
  • In the top right hand corner of the home page click Sign in

  • Enter your Aberystwyth University username and password and click Login

If you have started your search without signing in to Primo, you can still sign in anytime when you see the following orange disclaimer on the page or item record to get complete results and to request items:

How can I tell if I'm signed in?

You can tell if you've signed into Primo because your name appears in bold at the top of the page.

Remember to log out of Primo after you have completed your searches and work. 

  • Go back to the top right hand corner of the home screen where your name is displayed
  • Click Sign out   

  • When you have successfully signed out, the Sign in option will now be displayed again rather than your name. 

What's at the top of the Primo home page?

At the very top menu bar on the Primo homepage, you will see a row of options available to you:

Take a look through the following tabs to familiarise yourself with the different functions.

Click this and it will clear your current search ready to start a brand new search. 

The EJourmal Search or Browzine is new way to browse and search thousands of electronic journals available to you as a member of Aberystwyth University. 

Using BrowZine you can: 

  • Browse or search by subject area to find ejournals of interest 
  • Search for a specific title 
  • Create your own bookshelf of favourite ejournals and organise them how you want 
  • Follow your favourite titles and receive alerts when a new issue is published 
  • Save articles in your personal library which will sync across your devices 

BrowZine can be used on your computer, or you can download the app for use on an Android or Apple device. The Browzine app will sync across multiple devices so you can keep up with your ejournal reading on the move. 

Find it on Primo, the library catalogue, by clicking on the EJournal Search button on the top of the homepage or download the app from your app store. 

Search for databases

To search for databases you can do the following:

  • Enter keywords in the search box
  • Browse databases by category

For students to make More Books requests and for staff to order books from their department's discretionary fund.

The Document Supply service can be used to borrow books or acquire journal articles which are not available at Aberystwyth University libraries.
