Key Databases

All the electronic resources for Law and Criminology can be found through Primo where you can discover individual resources or cross-search a number of them at once. Primo includes key resources such as citation databases, e-journals and e-books, selected websites, subject gateways, data and media resources, news, reference materials and library catalogues

Off-Campus access

Our extensive collections of electronic journals, databases and e-books remain available to you 24/7 on and off-campus.

Before you start any searching off-campus:

sign in to Primo

You know you have signed in successfully if your name displays at the top right hand of your screen.

You are now authenticated to access AU subscribed electronic resources. If you close your browser, you will need to sign into Primo again to re-authenticate.

Searching for journal articles

Journals provide important sources of academic information.  You can search for ​journal articles using the ​Articles search ​in Primo.

Westlaw training

Manon Chirgwin is TR Legal Student Representative for Aberystwyth University. Manon is available to help with any issues you have with Westlaw UK and to provide training on the various aspects of the database.

What sessions are there?

Training -  Basic training is for the basic skills to use Westlaw, then there’s Advanced training which goes into further detail on some of the features and shows you new features. There is also international training which takes you through how to use ‘international materials’.  Training sessions are held throughout the year

Certification - Certification is a test you can take to gain a certificate in Legal Research skills which shows you have an understanding of using Westlaw for legal research. Again there are 3 types, basic, advanced and international. You need to attend a training session before you can do certification.

Semester 2 training and certification sessions.  Places are limited.  Register using the links below:

  • 12th February 2:10pm – 4pm in Hugh Owen C66 - register
  • 18th March 2:10pm – 4pm in Hugh Owen C66 - register
  • 25th March 2:10pm – 4pm in Hugh Owen C66 - register

Scenario Training and Prepare for Practice - Scenario training and prepare for practice sessions are designed to enhance your research skills in a practical way using a scenario to guide your research. 

Commercial Acumen - The Commercial Acumen session is designed to increase your commercial awareness - a useful training session for when you start thinking about training contracts and pupilage in your second or third year. 

The session will be held on:

  • 11th March 2:10pm in Llandinam B23 -  register

Drop in clinics - Manon runs Westlaw drop-in clinics every week where you can ask any Westlaw question – specific or general – from how to search for cases to how to use Westlaw to enhance your training contract applications.

  • drop in sessions are available:
    • Tuesdays 1-3 in Hugh Owen A10
    • Wednesdays 10-12 in Hugh Owen A10
    • The one exception to this is the first Wednesday of each month - these sessions will be at the same time but in Penbryn 4 room 424.
